2018 - Current

Intro to Printmaking

Georgia State University

2017-2018

Intro to Printmaking course assignments include relief, citrasolv transfer, etching, and monotype.

Students were encouraged to experiment with mixed media applications including watercolor, monotype printing, and yupo color transfer.

Intro to Studio

Georgia State University

2019

Intro to Studio course assignments centered around non traditional drawing exercises to encourage students to engage the experimental side of what a studio practice could be.

Images included are a succession of 2D and 3D projects that inform each other.

Paper, Scissors, X

Georgia State University

2019

Bridging from a Josef Albers exercise in creative constraints, students were instructed to create any object they choose using only three items: Paper, Scissors, and (X).

The (X) variable was completely up the them. It could be glue, dirt, metal, fire, water, light, etc.

A common theme in my Intro to Studio courses is the idea of making big decisions in small spaces and many projects have one element that is completely their choice.

Chance Based Drawings

Georgia State University

2019

Students were instructed to create a drawing game that utilizes chance by the rolling of two dice. They were to create a ‘set’ containing 6 ‘actions’ and 6 ‘objects,’ one command for each dice and its respective numbers. One dice dictated the ‘action’ (how it was applied) where the other dice dictated the ‘object’ (what was drawn).

Example: A roll of the dice yielded a ‘2’ and a ‘6’

2 = draw with your elbow

6 = the last thing you ate

The results of this drawing exercise presented students with the opportunity of creating a new drawing, outside of their control. The results are often fun, engaging, and enlightening.

Drawings Become…

Georgia State University

2019

Students were instructed to consider using any drawing from the semester at this point. Drawing choices included sound map drawings, listening session drawings, or chance based drawings.

From their choice they were to use the drawing as a template to create a new work of art with the following considerations:

1. It cannot be another drawing.

2. It must be a medium or process they are unfamiliar with.

The results are often striking, courageous and inventive. The process of working in a new medium or process retrains their current skill set to adapt to new material constraints and how to effectively learn from the process of failure and discovery.
